What is Holotropic Breathwork – and why should I try it?

Holotropic Breathwork (HB) is a guided breathing practice developed by Stanislav Grof and Christina Grof designed to help individuals access non-ordinary states of consciousness for emotional healing, self-exploration, and spiritual growth.

Physically, the practice of sustained, deeper or more rapid breathing activates the autonomic nervous system and can improve circulation, reduce muscular tension, and enhance respiratory efficiency.

Emotionally, participants often experience release of stored trauma, catharsis, and greater clarity of inner experience—one observational study found that after a session of HB, participants reported significant reductions in stress symptoms and improved life satisfaction at a four-week follow-up. Spiritually, Holotropic Breathwork can support expansion of awareness, connection with deeper parts of self, and a sense of wholeness or transcendence. Its name literally means “moving toward wholeness.”

While rigorous large-scale clinical trials are still limited, meta-analyses of breathwork practices broadly indicate meaningful benefits for stress, anxiety, and mental-health outcomes. Nature

Because of its intensity and altered-state potential, HB is best practiced in a safe, professionally guided context and is often regarded as a complement (not a substitute) to conventional therapeutic or medical care.
